Long time no see!
Life has been somewhat hectic since we last chatted. I have submitted my masters dissertation (whose results should be out later this month!!) and I have started my life as a philosophy PhD student in Aberdeen!
Its only been a couple of weeks and this PhD business is already making me crazy. I thought I yearned for the company of fellow philosophers until such company became inescapable and now I look back wistfully at the days when I would be the only one in a room to know what 'ontological' means. Now I cringe as I have to seek clarification of the meaning of terms like 'Linguistic Ersatzism'. Its not that I ever felt like the biggest finish in any of the ponds I have previously inhabited, it's just that when you're studying for an MSc in Science,Media and Public Policy, its easy to feel like you might be the fish with the most philosophical training.
PhD life can be tough, and sometimes lonely. I think I have more contact with other academics than a lot of research students in the arts, but even so. There's nobody here to care about the struggle it is to read up on the epistemology of testimony before my next supervision meeting and still manage to find a shop within walking distance that sells parsnips. And so old friend, I have decided that you shall be my outlet for expressing woe at these day to day crises. I shall endeavor to speak with you quite frequently and in so doing I hope to add some stability to the delicate mental balancing act which I am currently performing.
